Video: GameDuell Tech Talk with Jeanfrancois Arcand, creator of the Atmosphere Framework
The recent GameDuell Tech Talk featured Jeanfrancois Arcand. He is is a visionary and pioneer specialized in the development of modern, asynchronous web frameworks for client-server communication. If you missed his presentation about the Atmosphere Framework, check out the video below.
GameDuell Tech Talk: Meet Jeanfrancois Arcand, creator of Atmosphere Framework
GameDuell's upcoming Tech Talk will take place on January 21 at 19:00 CET (admittance at 18:30 CET) in the GameDuell HQ at Taubenstraße 24-25 in Berlin-Mitte.
This time we'll host Jeanfrancois Arcand. The title of our first Tech Talk of 2013 is "Atmosphere Framework: WebSockets for Everyone, Everywhere!".
We are pleased to welcome Jeanfrancois Arcand to the GameDuell Tech Talk. Jeanfrancois is a visionary and pioneer specialized in the development of modern, asynchronous web frameworks for client-server communication.
In his presentation, Jeanfrancois will provide insight into what WebSocket protocol and Atmosphere Framework are, and how these can be used to effectively solve problems.
The Atmosphere Framework, invented by Jeanfrancois, has already shown a tendency to be included in the current specification standards JSP 356 as one of the first and only implementations of its kind. Furthermore, one of the advantages of Atmosphere Framework is that it can be used with all major application servers, i.e. JBoss, Glassfish and Tomcat.
At GameDuell, we regard technical knowledge as a significant competitive advantage. We promote Berlin as a location for online business and therefore also make an effort to learn more about and actively use the developments within this field even while still in the early stages. The Atmosphere Framework is already being used at GameDuell, particularly in the development of games using HTML5.
In order to take full advantage of this progress through technology, GameDuell emphasizes the importance of continuously training our developers through appropriate workshops and coaching. Therefore, we are also pleased to have arranged a comprehensive workshop between Jeanfrancois Arcand and our developers. The workshop will take place before the Tech Talk.
The GameDuell Tech Talk with prominent guest speakers usually takes place every 2-3 months
This agenda
The Atmosphere Framework allows the creation of portable Comet and WebSocket applications across browser and server. In this session Jeanfrancois will first introduce the new WebSocket technology and show how easy it is to write such application using the Atmosphere Framework.
Next he will introduce Atmosphere's WebSocket clients Java and JavaScript. He will then demonstrate how WebSocket applications can be highly scaled using Redis's data structure server. The session will conclude by deploying the WebSocket application into environments that don't support the protocol and how Atmosphere can transparently emulate WebSocket support.
The speaker

Jeanfrancois Arcand
Jeanfrancois is currently leading the Atmosphere Frawework at Wordnik.com. He is the creator of Atmosphere, a framework for building powerful websocket and comet application. He is also the author of the Grizzly Framework, the powerful NIO front end used by the GlassFish Application Server and the author if AHC, an asynchronous HTTP client library.
Jeanfrancois has also contributed to Tomcat, Apache Commons, etc.

Next GameDuell Tech Talk features Sebastian Schelter
The GameDuell Tech Talk is a themed meeting especially intended for company founders and CEOs with an interest in web, developers, computer scientists and others interested in technology.
Each Tech Talk meeting focuses on a presentation of a technical innovation or conceptual development.
One or more experts share their knowledge and answer questions from the guests.
This time Sebastian Schelter will be speaking on the topic "Introducing Apache Giraph for Large Scale Graph Processing".
Save the date for this Tech Talk: May 29 at 6.30pm in the GameDuell HQ, Taubenstraße 24-25, Berlin.
Sebastian Schelter is a PhD student at the Database Systems and Information Management Group (DIMA) of TU Berlin. He is also a committer and PMC member of Apache Mahout and Apache Giraph.
All you need to know about the topic
Web and online social graphs have been rapidly growing in size and scale during the past decade.
Processing such graphs, which consist of millions of vertices and hundreds of millions to billions of edges, is a huge technical challenge.
Experience shows that the Map/Reduce paradigm is not a good fit for working with large graph structures.
This talk will give an introduction to Apache Giraph, a system that implements the bulk-synchronous parallel (BSP) model in a way that is extremely well suited for implementing graph algorithms.
Giraph is a young project which is currently being developed by people from leading internet companies such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, and can be run on standard Hadoop infrastructure.
